Getting to Ouray
Ouray sits at 7,800 feet in a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, often called the "Switzerland of America." It's a bit of a journey, but we promise the drive in is worth it. Here's what you need to know.

Airports and driving

Closest AirportMontrose Regional (MTJ)
About 45 minutes from Ouray. Direct flights from Denver, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and several other cities, with more routes in summer. Rental cars are available at the terminal. -
Alternate AirportsGrand Junction (GJT) is about 2 hours away and often has more flight options.
Durango (DRO) is about 2 hours south over the Million Dollar Highway, one of the most scenic drives in the country.
Denver (DEN) is roughly a 6 hour drive if you'd like to make a road trip of it. -
DrivingOuray is on US Highway 550, about 10 miles south of Ridgway. From Montrose, take US 550 south for about 35 miles. Mountain roads are fully open in June, but bring layers; evenings are cool at this elevation.

Ouray also has plenty of vacation rentals, and nearby Ridgway (about 15 minutes north) offers additional hotels and lodges if town is booked up.
Getting Around
Once you arrive

Rental CarStrongly recommended. Rideshare is very limited in Ouray, and a car lets you explore the surrounding mountains. All major rental companies operate out of Montrose.

In TownDowntown Ouray is compact and walkable. Most restaurants, shops, and the hot springs pool are within a few blocks of Main Street.

AltitudeOuray is at 7,800 feet. Drink plenty of water, take it easy the first day, and go a little lighter on the cocktails than you might at sea level.
